What does an asphalt paving contractor do?
An asphalt paving contractor prepares the ground and lays hot mix asphalt over a stone base. Our main work is driveways and farm lanes, plus small parking lots for churches and shops. We also seal and repair older asphalt. We do not take on highway or interstate work.
How does pricing work on a paving job?
We price each job after we look at it. Size and length drive the price, along with the grading and stone base the ground needs. Tearing out an old driveway or adding drainage changes it too. You get a free estimate in writing before any work starts.
What area do you work in?
We are based in Lebanon, Tennessee, and we work about 60 miles around it. That reaches Nashville, Murfreesboro, Franklin and Gallatin, plus smaller towns like Watertown and Carthage. A long lane or a bigger lot farther out is still worth a call. Our service area page lists the towns by name.
Do I need a permit or a culvert for a new driveway?
Inside Lebanon, a new driveway needs a permit from the city's Engineering department, which sizes any driveway pipe. On a Wilson County road, put a flag where the drive will go and contact the Road Commission. Its culvert foreman sizes any culvert, and county culverts must be at least 24 feet long. A drive onto a state route needs a TDOT permit, which the property owner must get.
Should a new asphalt driveway be sealed?
Yes, and the first seal matters most. We normally seal the driveways we pave once the asphalt cures. After that, a new seal typically comes every two to three years. With our driveway sealcoating, the sealer gets worked into the pores to keep water out.
Can new asphalt go over my old driveway?
It can when the base under the old asphalt is still sound. An overlay is a new layer of hot mix laid over the old surface, with broken spots repaired first. When the base has failed, the driveway needs a full replacement from the ground up. We look at the driveway and tell you which one it needs.
Do you fix potholes and broken asphalt?
Yes. We patch potholes on driveways and small lots, and we cut out and replace sections that have failed. We fix broken edges too. Repairs also come first when a driveway is due for an overlay or a seal.
Is tar and chip a good choice for a long lane?
It can be. Tar and chip is liquid asphalt with stone chips rolled in, and it costs less up front than hot mix. The trade-offs are loose stone at first, a rougher surface, more upkeep and a shorter life. We quote tar and chip paving and hot mix side by side so you can compare.
Do you pave parking lots for churches and businesses?
Yes, small ones. We pave lots for churches, shops, offices, small stores and farm buildings, with the grading and stone base included. Once the asphalt is down, we can add parking lot striping. Big-box store lots are too big for us. A lot that size is a job for a large commercial paving company.
