Asphalt Paving, Sealcoating and Repair in Smyrna

Smyrna has grown fast, but much of its asphalt is no longer new. The Census counted 53,070 residents in 2020 and estimated 63,321 by July 2025. Still, the median home in town was built in 2000, and 21 percent were built before 1980. Older drives show their age in spreading cracks and edges that crumble into the grass.

Smyrna is part of our service area at Paveway Paving Pros, an asphalt paving contractor based in Lebanon. The drive over is about 27 road miles, most of it on I-840. For Smyrna homes, we take on asphalt driveway paving at older houses and new builds. Call or text (615) 894-5175 to book a free estimate.

Driveway paving in Smyrna: resurface or replace?

Census survey data shows about six in ten Smyrna homes are single-family detached houses. A quarter of all homes in town went up in the 2000s. New ones keep coming: the Census permit survey counted 504 single-family homes permitted in 2025.

On an older drive, the first question is the base under the asphalt. If the base is still sound, asphalt resurfacing can cover the worn surface with fresh hot mix. A failed base means tearing the drive out and rebuilding it from the grading up.

Potholes and broken spots get asphalt repair first. We patch the holes and cut out failed sections before any new asphalt or sealer goes down. That way the new layer sits on sound pavement.

Paving on Smyrna's glade rock and red clay

The NRCS soil survey for Rutherford County shows how close the rock sits in Smyrna. Near downtown, the biggest mapped soil unit is Gladeville mixed with rock outcrop. Gladeville is a very shallow, flaggy soil, with limestone about 3 to 12 inches down. Redcedar is what usually grows on it.

About one acre in five near downtown is this glade ground or bare rock. The most common soil series, Bradyville, runs deeper, with a red clay subsoil over limestone. Water moves through it slowly, so a drive needs a grade that carries runoff away. Sinkholes are part of the drainage picture too, and the Town's stormwater page asks residents to help keep them clean.

Shallow rock and slow-draining clay can both change the grading on a Smyrna drive. We lay string lines and spray paint the edges, then strip the grass and grade the ground to shed water. A roller packs the crushed stone base. We pave from the top end of the drive down to where it meets the road.

What does the Town of Smyrna require for a new driveway?

Inside the town limits, a new driveway or curb cut goes through the Public Works Department. So does an addition to an existing drive. The homeowner signs the Town's application and attaches a drawing with measurements to the property lines.

Next, the owner marks the area on the ground to match the drawing. A Town inspector checks those marks before any work starts, and a final inspection follows at the end. If property lines are hard to find, the Town may ask for a survey.

The form sets limits as well. No driveway may be wider than 35 feet at the street edge. Lowry Street and Sam Ridley Parkway are state routes, so a new drive onto either one needs a TDOT permit.

The Town's form ends with a reminder to call 811 before digging. State law asks for at least three working days of notice, and grading counts under that law. Near a creek, check the flood map: development in a mapped floodplain needs a permit through the Town Planner first. When we look at the job, we tell you which office covers your address.

Sealcoating and small lots around Smyrna

Asphalt in Smyrna sees both heat and frost. NOAA's station south of town averages about 102 days a year when the low hits 32 degrees or colder. It averages about 57 days when the high reaches 90 or more, by its 1991 to 2020 normals.

Asphalt has pores, and sealcoating fills them to keep moisture out. The sealer goes on by brush or squeegee and gets worked down into those pores.

In Smyrna, parking lot paving covers lots for churches and small shops. We grade the lot and build the stone base, and drainage is worked out in the grading. A new commercial site goes through the Town's Planning review. The Town's grading permit checklist even lists a state sinkhole approval letter, where one is needed.

Questions We Hear Around Smyrna

A few of the questions we hear most around Smyrna. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (615) 894-5175

Is Smyrna part of your service area?
Yes. Our service area covers about 60 miles around Lebanon across Middle Tennessee, and Smyrna sits well inside it. That includes the town limits and the Rutherford County roads around them. Call or text (615) 894-5175 with the address and a few details about the job.
How is driveway paving priced in Smyrna?
We price each Smyrna drive after we see it. A longer or wider drive takes more tons of hot mix. Base work counts too, and grading over shallow glade rock can take more effort. The free estimate lays out the whole job in writing.
Does a Smyrna driveway need a culvert pipe?
Some do, and Public Works sets the pipe size on the Town's driveway application. The Town's minimum is 15 inches unless it approves otherwise, and headwalls may be required. On a state route such as Lowry Street, TDOT's minimum is 18 inches. The Town also asks owners to keep ditches on their property clear of brush and grass clippings.
How often should a driveway in Smyrna be sealcoated?
We normally seal all the jobs we pave. The next coat typically follows two to three years after the first one. An older drive that has never been sealed can start the cycle once any repairs are done.
Do you pave long drives on acreage around Smyrna?
A long drive or farm lane gets the driveway process on a bigger scale. We pave lanes that run a half mile, and some that run a full mile. Outside the town limits, the Town's driveway rules do not apply. Check with the county or city that covers your address.
