Asphalt Paving, Sealcoating and Repair in Gallatin

Gallatin, the Sumner County seat, is growing fast. The Census Bureau counted 44,431 residents in 2020 and estimated 54,590 by July 2025. Its permit survey shows 905 single-family homes permitted here in 2024 and 843 in 2025. Older drives in town face a different problem: cracks spread, and the edges crumble into the grass.

Paveway Paving Pros is an asphalt paving contractor based in Lebanon, and Gallatin is part of our service area. The town sits about 20 road miles from Lebanon, north up TN-109 and across the Cumberland River. We handle asphalt driveway paving in town and farm lane and private road paving on the acreage outside it. Call or text (615) 894-5175 for a free estimate.

Driveway paving for Gallatin's new and older homes

Census survey data dates four of every ten Gallatin homes to 2010 or later. About one in five was built before 1970. On an older drive with a sound base, asphalt resurfacing puts new hot mix over the old surface. A failed base needs a full replacement instead.

New construction keeps coming. The city's development list, updated in July 2026, shows Nexus Tennessee under construction east of TN-109. That plan alone carries 1,350 single-family lots. Miers Hill, north of Hix Lane, is pending with 193 more.

New asphalt in those neighborhoods will need sealcoating to keep moisture out. We work the sealer into the asphalt with a brush or squeegee to fill its pores.

The clay and limestone under Gallatin driveways

In the NRCS soil survey, most of Gallatin sits on Harpeth silt loam. It is a very deep, well drained soil on high stream terraces and rolling uplands. The steeper ground carries Mimosa soils, with a clay subsoil that water moves through slowly. Limestone lies 40 to 60 inches beneath them.

Rock comes closer in places. Barfield soils on some slopes are less than 40 inches deep to rock, with outcrops mapped among them. Along the creeks, the survey labels the bottomland soils occasionally flooded. On private land, the city's stormwater policy leaves pipes and drainage to the owner.

Clay holds water, so drainage gets settled in the grading. We set string lines and strip out the grass and vegetation. Then we grade the drive to shed runoff and pack the crushed stone base with a roller. The hot mix goes down last, from the top of the drive out to the road.

Do you need a permit to pave a driveway in Gallatin?

The City of Gallatin's Engineering Division issues driveway permits. Its permit covers new driveways and changes to existing ones. The Building Codes Department's permit list does not name driveways or paving, so Engineering is the office to ask.

The city sets limits on the entrance itself. A single-family home gets one access point onto the public right-of-way unless the City Engineer approves more. A residential driveway can be no wider than 26 feet at its widest point. Where a ditch runs along the road, the permit calls for a culvert.

A driveway onto a state route, such as TN-109 or Hartsville Pike, goes through the local TDOT office instead. Tennessee law also calls for an 811 request at least three working days before digging, and grading counts. We point you to the right office before work starts.

Farm lanes and small lots around Gallatin

Past the subdivisions, the lots get bigger and the drives get longer. Sumner County still counted 1,248 farms on about 140,000 acres in the 2022 farm census. Castalian Springs lies east along Hartsville Pike, and Bethpage sits to the northeast.

We pave lanes a half mile to a mile long. The process matches a driveway, at a longer scale. Some owners ask about tar and chip, which costs less up front, and we quote it beside hot mix.

In town, we pave small lots for churches and small shops. Parking lot paving includes the grading and the stone base, with drainage worked into the grade. A new commercial entrance typically goes through the city's Planning Commission process. A site that disturbs an acre or more generally needs a land disturbance permit too.

Gallatin FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Gallatin

A few of the questions we hear most around Gallatin. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (615) 894-5175

Is Gallatin inside your service area?
Yes. Gallatin is part of our service area, which runs about 60 miles around Lebanon across Middle Tennessee. That covers the town itself and the farm country around it, out past Cottontown and Castalian Springs. Call or text (615) 894-5175 to set up a free estimate.
Does a Gallatin driveway need a culvert?
It does when a drainage ditch runs along the road at the entrance, under the city's driveway permit rules. The approved pipe materials are concrete and HDPE, and HDPE pipe needs headwalls. In the public right-of-way, the city lists driveway culverts among the drainage structures it maintains. Questions about a specific entrance go to the Engineering Division.
What does driveway paving in Gallatin cost?
Each drive gets its own price after we see it. Length and width set how much hot mix the job takes. Grading on a Gallatin clay slope adds work, and so does an old surface that has to come out. The free estimate puts every part of it in writing.
How often does a Gallatin driveway need sealcoating?
We normally seal the driveways we pave. After that first seal, the next coat typically comes two to three years later. Gallatin gets plenty of water to keep out: its NOAA station averages 53.5 inches of precipitation a year. Down the lake, NOAA's Old Hickory Dam station averages 86 days a year at or below freezing.
